Jamaican-American storyteller and distinguished media professional Sharon Gordon launched her first book, “Sherribaby. “ Narrated as a thought-provoking and captivating work of fiction, it takes readers on an emotional journey of resilience, identity, and self-discovery while weaving together themes of love, loss, and the triumph of the human spirit.
Gordon, a former Caribbean Life contributor, during a grand fanfare on April 24 at the elegant Island Seas Lounge on Utica Avenue, Brooklyn, kicked off her book signing and celebration of her upcoming tour, to the Caribbean, Florida, Maryland, and Canada.
The excited first-time author, “lady in a red pantsuit” and white sandals, who received a round of applause from scores of country folk, family, and friends, expressed joyfulness, as she thanked the crowd for the outpouring of support, before sitting down to read excerpts from her volume. The title chronicles a little girl’s big voice in post-Independence Jamaica.
Pastor Courtney Mitchell’s excellent moderator duties kept the audience transfixed as he delved into the story with questions for the author, who read select chapters from Sherribaby, a book sure to become a “New York Times bestseller.”
Gordon, an audiobook narrator, actress, producer, and the 2025 winner of What’s Your Story Jamaica, at the Fourth Annual Storytelling competition on the Island, evoked nostalgia as she recalled scenery, personalities, and idioms used while growing up in Jamaica.
“I wrote the book to honor miss Lou who was one of my mentors and the fact that this novel speaks about this language of ours and how it’s treated with scorn.”
“I’m also following in the footsteps of Alice Walker, and I’m using that language, because the story Sherribaby is about a little girl telling a story about a specific time in Jamaica 1969 to 1975, so this being a little precocious girl, I would say she’s been using the language that she’s hearing all around her. She didn’t speak any other way but that way then, it wouldn’t have been authentic.
“This story is deeply personal yet universally relatable. “Sheribaby is for anyone who has ever struggled to find their voice, reclaim their power, and embrace their truth. I am beyond thrilled to finally share Sheribaby with the world and to see it resonate with readers, said Gordon.
Terrel Blackett, a powerhouse in public relations and founder of Supreme Dynasties Enterprise, is Gordon’s official publicist.
Gordon told Blackett, “I am a storyteller but what I’ve done with this first novel is to create a fiction that is so real that it is causing people to have emotional attachment.”
“I’m honored to be working with her to ensure her story and legacy are shared on a global stage. Sheribaby is a powerful narrative, and I am committed to making this project a monumental success,” said Blackett, who called Gordon, a cultural icon whose voice and vision resonate with so many.
She added that upcoming tour projects will be scheduled under the expert guidance of Supreme Dynasties Enterprise.
