Sybil ‘Gee Gee’ George has devoted her life to empowering others through community initiatives and her radio show, “The Gee Gee Show,” which airs on Caribbean Powerjam every Tuesday and Wednesday. Originally from Berbice, Guyana, Geegee is a trained cosmetologist who has transformed her passion for beauty into a broader mission of uplifting those around her.
As the third of six children, her upbringing in Guyana instilled a strong desire to give back to her community. Her commitment to amplifying local voices inspired her idea for her radio show. The program serves as a platform for storytelling and sharing experiences, allowing her to connect with listeners and discuss her personal journey and philanthropic endeavors. “I want my story to be heard all around the world,” she expresses.
This passion led her to establish ‘The Know Your Worth Foundation,’ which honors individuals who significantly contribute to their communities through an annual gala. This year, the event will occur on Saturday, Nov. 11, at Naomi’s Suite, 8926 Ave. D, Brooklyn, NY.
The gala will also commemorate the first anniversary of her radio show, which has become a cornerstone of her outreach efforts. “It’s about paying homage to those who give back,” she explains, emphasizing the need to recognize the hard work and dedication of community members. The event will see several live performances from popular Guyanese entertainers, including Kady Kish, Fojo, and more.
Her Foundation empowers women through education and entrepreneurship, supporting those returning to school and starting businesses. It also hosts retreats aimed at fostering personal and professional growth. “So many women have skills that need to be activated,” she noted, highlighting the importance of providing resources and support for their success.
This year’s gala will function as both a fundraiser and an awards ceremony, promising to be meaningful. George encourages community members to purchase tickets, stating, “Every ticket purchased goes towards helping someone out there.”
Additionally, she seeks donations from local businesses to assist with the event’s logistics, underscoring the collective effort needed to sustain such initiatives.
Honorees at this year’s gala include Marlon Jacobs, who will receive the Entrepreneur of the Year Award; Simona Broomes, a former government minister in Guyana honored for her dedication to combating human trafficking; DJ Flex, recognized for his community contributions; and Dimple Willabus, who will receive an Award of Recognition. Ten awards will be presented, reflecting her commitment to celebrating those who uplift others.
Despite facing personal health challenges, George remains resolute in her mission to give back. “I refuse to allow anything to break me,” she asserts, inspiring others to persevere through their struggles.
Interested persons can purchase tickets for the gala through her Facebook page or by contacting her directly at 516-601-8510. They are also available at Caribbean Powerjam Radio and Sandra’s Luxury Studio in Brooklyn.
As she prepares for the gala, her unwavering spirit and dedication to community empowerment are a beacon of hope for many. They demonstrate how personal trials can lead to profound impact when channeled into helping others.
