Mayoral Candidate Andrew M. Cuomo celebrated Haitian Flag Day with community members at a street fair in Brooklyn.
The former New York Governor was joined by Assembly Member and Brooklyn Democratic Chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn and Council Member Farah Louis, the daughters of Haitian immigrants.
“Our diversity is our strength, and the Haitian community is an important and vibrant part of the fabric of this great city,” Cuomo said. “It is an honor to celebrate Haiti’s rich culture alongside these proud New Yorkers.
“Together, we’re going to put this city back on the right track and make it a safer and more affordable place for all,” he added.
Bichotte Hermelyn, who represents the 42nd Assembly District in Brooklyn, said Haitian Flag Day is “a powerful reminder of our ancestors’ resilience and the enduring pride of the Haitian people.
“It’s a day to celebrate our culture, honor our history, and uplift the voices of Haitian Americans who continue to shape the future of New York and beyond,” she added.
Throughout his career in public service, Cuomo said he has been a champion for working New Yorkers.
He said he raised wages for millions and protected the right to organize when the Supreme Court tried to undermine the labor movement.
Cuomo said he also increased access to healthcare, enacted the nation’s strongest paid family leave program, and expanded apprenticeships, vocational training, and workforce development programs.
In addition, the former governor said he advanced the most substantial infrastructure program in a generation, including the Second Avenue Subway, the Moynihan Train Hall, the new Kosciuszko Bridge, and the new JFK and LaGuardia Airports—all major projects built with union labor.
