Calvary’s Mission Food Pantry in Richmond Hill, Queens, which supports around 1,500 families weekly, is gearing up for a significant expansion. Director of Operations Kevin Sookdeo announced plans for their 16th annual fundraiser banquet to help the pantry secure a dedicated facility. The charity currently provides groceries valued at $100 to $120 per family weekly from the basement of the Community Bible Evangelical Free Church. Sookdeo and his team are working to expand their services in response to rising demand.
The upcoming fundraiser, scheduled for October 11 at Dyker Beach Golf Course, 1030 86th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11228, aims to raise $1.5 million. This goal will enable Calvary’s Mission to purchase a building and operate five days a week. “Having our own space would significantly improve our operations…It would enable us to better serve our people by allowing them to access food on a schedule that fits their needs rather than only once a week. We envision a people-choice pantry where individuals can shop for their needs in a grocery store-like setting,” Sookdeo explained.
Sookdeo added that a new build will help Calvary’s Mission offer the community a more comprehensive support system. “We want to meet with our people, understand their needs, and offer additional support beyond just food distribution…this could include connecting them with other services and resources they may need,” he added.

The event at Dyker Beach Golf Course promises to be a memorable evening. It will feature a three-course meal, desserts, an open bar, and dancing. Tickets are $125, and all proceeds will go towards the expansion project. The golf course’s scenic location and welcoming environment will provide an enjoyable experience for attendees while supporting a worthy cause.
Sookdeo emphasized that Calvary’s Mission is fully volunteer-driven, with all donations directly benefiting the community. “We don’t pay anyone; every dollar we receive goes straight into our efforts to help those in need…If there are any philanthropists out there who want to make a significant impact, we welcome any contributions,” he stressed.
In addition to donations and ticket sales, the organization is always looking for volunteers. “If people want to get involved, they can volunteer… we’re grateful for any support we receive,” the director noted.
