Bloomberg Philanthropies has made Montego Bay, Jamaica, the first Caribbean city to benefit from the Bloomberg Global Initiative, which spans over six continents and almost 100 cities.
Jamaica will receive a boost to enhance its climate change resilience and youth empowerment program. This contribution is a double effort of J$16 million, following an initial investment of J$8 million.
The initial $8 million investment funded several impactful projects across Montego Bay. One of the main accomplishments was the rainwater harvesting system at Maldon High School, which addressed severe water problems that very often disrupted school operations. This project ensured a reliable water supply and prevented the school from being closed due to a water shortage.
By doubling down on the contribution to the Western Jamaican City, the funds will also seek to empower young people seeking employment opportunities.
Tracy Colunga, the director of civic engagement for Bloomberg Philanthropies, commended the Mayor of Montego Bay, Richard Vernon, for his efforts, saying, “He is the reason you guys have the money,” she commented. “This is just the beginning of the mayor’s relationship with Bloomberg projects,” Colunga stressed.
She emphasized the recipients’ need for full cooperation: “The better you do, the more money you get, the more opportunities.” According to Ms. Colunga, Montego Bay’s success may result in more investment, with no cap on the amount of money available.
Mayor Vernon and his team are exploring other economic development, waste management, and innovation projects to continue building a sustainable and resilient Montego Bay.
Projects include a trash management program at Charles Gordon Market, a renovated greenhouse at Spot Valley High School, and a rainwater collecting system at Maldon High School.
Nineteen-year-old Kalecia Francis, who oversaw one of the initial projects, said, “It was a team effort. Who oversaw a community project, to erect the frame and lay the foundation, everyone joined forces,” she stated.
Colunga confirmed, “Show us that you care, and we will invest more in your city.”
In addition, this project is establishing a model for other Caribbean countries; Montego Bay’s partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies places the city as a regional leader in youth and climate efforts.
