Alfred, Charles repeat as top sportspersons for 2024

Track queen Julien Alfred and cricketer Johnson Charles were again victorious in taking home the Senior Sports Personalities of the Year awards when the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports held their annual awards earlier this month.

It was no surprise when St. Lucia’s Prime Minister, Philip J. Pierre, revealed that the 23-year-old Alfred, who created history by winning the country’s first-ever Olympic medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was named Senior Female Sports Personality of 2024.

Alfred also won the World Indoor Championship 60m title and Diamond League 100m title to go along with her gold medal in the 100m and silver in the 200m at the Olympics.

The government had previously pledged a $1 million reward to her last September, and a check in that amount was also presented to her at the awards.

Meanwhile, 36-year-old Johnson Charles won the Senior Male Sports Personality of 2024 after enjoying a relatively successful year for the West Indies while assisting the St. Lucia Kings to win their maiden Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title.

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy took home the Coach of the Year award after coaching the Kings to victory over the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL final.
